Ink and gouache on paper and Mylar, 2007

Between above and below

Between above and below consists of six collaborative prints by Amanda Hughen and Jennifer Starkweather. The series was originally commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission as part of their Art on Market Street program. The series was exhibited as six foot posters in 24 pedestrian kiosks along Market Street for four months in 2007.

In each image in this series, the artists isolated and juxtaposed forms and patterns derived from built systems and natural and mechanical movements along, above, and below Market Street. Starkweather worked in ink and gouache, using maps and data about transportation, pedestrian movement, electricity, trees, and bicycles as source material to create her marks. Hughen made screenprints from her drawings of geometric forms around Market Street, such as BART tiles, street lights, one way signs, and manhole covers.
